Topic: Thumbnail clarity

I was orignially storing images locally, then switched to Flickr.  Tonight, creating new gallery with images stored locally, I am aware the thumbnails are not clear.  I have not changed anything in creating a gallery that I am aware of.  I have now updated my SV version and no difference.  Should local gallery thumbnails be blurrier than Flickr sourced?  Both sources use the same uploaded images.

Re: Thumbnail clarity

Most of the thumbnails in your local gallery have dimensions of 76x76 but they are being displayed at 75x75.
Regenerate all your thumbnails to the same dimensions and ensure that these dimensions are reflected in the thumbWidth and thumbHeight settings in your gallery's XML file.

Re: Thumbnail clarity

I thought the Simple Viewer program created the thumbnails.  I specified the 75x75 size and thought it created these from my original images.  So I have to create an individual thumbnail for every photo I upload?

Re: Thumbnail clarity

If using svBuilder-Pro to create your gallery, the program should create thumbnails for you at the specified size.
If you have set the thumbnail size to be 75x75 on the 'Images' tab, then they should not be created at 76x76.
Make sure you have the most recent version of svBuilder-Pro (v2.1.3) installed (found inside the current SimpleViewer Pro download package that can be downloaded from the link in your purchase email).

Re: Thumbnail clarity

I have installed the latest version.  Looking at my original galleries, the thumbnails have been saved at 74x74 even though I left the default value of 75x75.  I've tried saving tham at 74 too and it's still blurry.

Re: Thumbnail clarity

I have tried a multitude of different images (different sizes, aspect ratios and file types) and all thumbnails are exactly 75 x 75.
Can you upload one of your original images that you are feeding into svBulder-Pro that gives you a non-75x75 thumbnail (even though the Thumbnail Size is set to 75x75) and I'll try to replicate the issue?

Ok, 100x100 and they ARE 100x100 in my folder.  Don't know why it doesn't work with the smaller ones.

Re: Thumbnail clarity

Think I misunderstood.
http://www.greatscottphotography.co.uk/ … gory=test2 is set to 75x75 and gives 74x74 thumbnail.

Re: Thumbnail clarity

The thumbnail JPG in your gallery above is 75 x 75 http://www.greatscottphotography.co.uk/ … flight.JPG

I just tested here and svBuilder is creating thumbnails at the correct size. Are you saying that it's not doing that for you? If so can you post a URL to an image that is not working for you.

Re: Thumbnail clarity

http://www.greatscottphotography.co.uk/ … C_0321.jpg  This image is not clear in my thumbnails on the gallery here http://www.greatscottphotography.co.uk/ … =hot_cross

I have just re-uploaded it here http://www.greatscottphotography.co.uk/ … egory=test and it is still showing as 76x76 in my local folder.

Is it just that Flickr produces a clearer thumbnail and that's it?

Re: Thumbnail clarity

Try opening your gallery in svBuilder, resize the thumbs to 100 and then resize them again to 75. They should then be the correct size.

Re: Thumbnail clarity

Sorry, still saving as 76x76 to my computer and still blurry when I upload.  Will leave it until tomorrow now as it's gone 1.30am.  Perhaps clear everything out and start again.  Thanks for your time.

Re: Thumbnail clarity

I am still working on this and am trying to sort out my gallery and image dimensions.

Embed options are set at gallery width 900 and gallery height 550.  I take that to be the size of my whole gallery including thumbnails and titles, etc.

So, to set the max length and max height of my main image (550) I am looking at the parameters here http://simpleviewer.net/simpleviewer/pr … #mainimage  When I select Main Image in svBuilder-Pro, I don't see any option to set maxImageWidth or maxImageHeight.  It starts with imageFrameStyle.

Where do I set the max dimensions of the image so that I can ensure I am uploading images that match that?

Re: Thumbnail clarity

Ah... this is just after I upload the images.  I found it.  So would I be right in saying the gallery dimensions that show in the embed code do not have to match the image sizes uploaded?  The image dimensions are shown in the gallery.xml file.

Re: Thumbnail clarity

Next problem then...

This gallery http://www.greatscottphotography.co.uk/ … 24_04_2011 has image dimensions set to 500 max and images uploaded at 500 max and has blurry non-75x75 thumbnails.

This gallery http://www.greatscottphotography.co.uk/ … _04_2011_a has image dimensions set to 550 max and images uploaded at 550 max and has better non-75x75 thumbnails

Why does the main image look the same size in both galleries if it should be different?

Re: Thumbnail clarity

The maxImageWidth and maxImageHeight options are not the actual dimensions at which the main images will be displayed.
They should be set to the width of the widest image in the gallery (in pixels) and the height of the tallest image in the gallery respectively and are used to determine the best layout for your gallery.
You can also use the imageScaleMode option (details in this section) to change how the image fits into the image area.
Under default settings, the main image will be dynamically resized depending on the size of the user's browser window.
If you want the main image to always be displayed at a specific size, then use a Fixed Layout and set the imageAreaWidth and imageAreaHeight options.

Re: Thumbnail clarity

I have been told my images are 'soft'.  So this is because

the main image will be dynamically resized depending on the size of the user's browser window

So my images will only show at their actual size and quality if I use fixed layout?

Re: Thumbnail clarity

Try viewing the sample gallery here: http://simpleviewer.net/simpleviewer/examples/modern/ and resizing your browser window.
This is the default behaviour of SimpleViewer which allows users to always see the entire main image via a dynamic layout no matter how small or large their browser window is.
A Fixed Layout allows you to determine fixed sizes and locations for gallery elements.
With regard to quality, when viewing a gallery, your main image becomes part of a Flash presentation, the quality of which can also be changed using the Flash param 'quality' (see 'Optional attributes and possible values' on this page: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/127/tn_12701.html).
To set a Flash param in your gallery, see here: http://simpleviewer.net/simpleviewer/su … tml#params
