Topic: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

I’m using a MacBook Pro on OS 10.6.7 and using Safari 5.0.5.

I am using simpleviewer to upload my images in the gallery for my artist website.
I have been having problems updating my art website as apparently, this Mac ,with the specifics above, is not able to read XML files with text descriptions.

I am able to see the images but not the details and dimensions that describe the work. This is not the case with my older Macusing 10.4.11 and Safari 3.0.4.

Please help.

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

Captions for images should be enclosed within
...
tags, eg:

    <filename>wide.jpg</filename>

Caption goes here

HTML formatted captions should also be inside CDATA tags, eg.:

    <filename>wide.jpg</filename>

Link caption goes here

If you continue to experience difficulties, please post the URL to your gallery so that we can take a look.

Yes it's still the same problem.

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

Your captions are displayed in your gallery in Firefox 5.0.1, Chrome 12, Safari 5.0.5 and IE9 on my PC.
Try clearing your browser's cache, in the browser in which the captions are not displayed, before reloading the gallery.

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

sorry, still no caption displayed.

Could it be a mac or os problem?

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

It should be neither.
If you are sure that your browser's cache has been completely cleared and that you are unable to see the captions in your gallery, then try installing and viewing your gallery in a different browser (for example, Firefox or Chrome).
Are you able to see the captions in your gallery with the new browser?

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

No it's still blank on both firefox and safari for me and my colleague who has the same system.

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

Try validating your page with the W3C Markup Validation Service and fix the errors reported.
Also, check that your browsers have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player installed and enabled by visiting this page: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

Still no luck. Do I need to upgrade to a newer version of simpleviewer?

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

You could certainly try as you seem to be using a version prior to v1.9 (and it look like SimpleViewer Standard rather than SimpleViewer Pro).

If you have SimpleViewer Pro, then upgrades are free within the same major version number so you could download v1.9 Pro using the link in your purchase email.
If you cannot find the email or your link has expired, then please fill in this form to receive a new link: http://simpleviewer.net/support/admin/upgrade.html

If you are using SimpleViewer Standard, then you can download the latest version (v2.1.3) from the download link on this page: http://simpleviewer.net/simpleviewer/

Details for 'Upgrading SimpleViewer Pro' (including instructions on 'Upgrading Exisiting Galleries to Version 2.1.3') can be found here: http://simpleviewer.net/simpleviewer/pr … grade.html

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

I have isolated this problem to be a Mac OS case.

I cant see the captions when I'm using my company MacBook Pro on OS 10.6.7 and using Safari 5.0.5, the same goes for me colleague.

I can see the captions with my older Mac using 10.4.11 and Safari 3.0.4.

I can also see the captions on my wife's Mac 10.5.8, and Safari 5.0.5.

It has got to be a Mac OS problem. Could you look into it. Maybe there are some patches. Because everything is fine except it cannot read captions on xml files.

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

In any case, I don't know how to update to a newer version. I recently took over updating my website from my designer who has quit. I am using an old standard version I presume and I use Dreamweaver to upload my files. I could possible email you what my xml and html files look like as I just use them as existing templates to load new images. Everything works fine except captions are missing.

I could open the swf files on my macromedia flash player 8 to view the gallery.

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

Try viewing these test galleries:
Gallery 1: SimpleViewer Standard v1.9 SWF file - Sample XML file
Gallery 2: Your SimpleViewer Standard SWF file - Your XML file (with only images changed)
Gallery 3: SimpleViewer Standard v1.9 SWF file - Your XML file (with only images changed)
Gallery 4: Your SimpleViewer Standard SWF file - Sample XML file
In which of these galleries can you see the captions?

The results of this small test might tell us something but, no matter what the results, I would certainly recommend updating SimpleViewer to the latest version.
There have been many changes to SimpleViewer since the version you use: http://simpleviewer.net/simpleviewer/history.html
You can download the latest version of SimpleViewer Standard (v2.1.3) from the download link on this page: http://simpleviewer.net/simpleviewer/
Instructions for 'Upgrading Exisiting Galleries to Version 2.1.3' can be found here: http://simpleviewer.net/simpleviewer/pr … grade.html

Maybe there are some patches.

The latest version of SimpleViewer v1.x is v1.9 which includes bugfixes since the version you use (which is prior to v1.8.5).
However, since you are using SimpleViewer Standard, you could upgrade to v2.1.3.

Edit: Test gallery links removed by original poster.

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

Strange,

I could see all the captions. so what could be wrong?

The link to upgrading galleries to 2.1.3 does not work.

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

I have tried upgrading and embedding the code but it still does not work. Am at my wit's end. I am using dreamweaver. If you can just pass me your email. I could pass you a sample of my gallery folder for you to take a look.

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

This might suggest that your gallery itself is OK and that your browser may be displaying a cached version of your 'gallery.xml' file (without the captions).
If you are sure that your browser cache has been completely deleted, you can also try the following.
Go to your http://www.thelacunasofgrace.com/2011/gallery.xml page directly in a browser, refresh the page (press F5) and then go back to reload and view the gallery.

The link to upgrading galleries to 2.1.3 does not work.

Sorry. I have now edited the post and corrected the link.

I could pass you a sample of my gallery folder for you to take a look.

Your gallery (including captions) displays fine in all browsers on my PC.
By all means email me your gallery folder (you can find my email address in my forum profile) but I have already taken a look at your embedding code and I have used your SWF and XML files in test galleries and, no matter what I do, I cannot find a problem or replicate your scenario.
However, I would still recommend upgrading to SimpleViewer Standard v2.1.3.

Re: Cannot read text from xml file on website.

Thanks. I have solved the problem. I just have to update all my galleries to the newer version.
