Topic: moving the gallery : do we must create parent folders ?

hallo,
i have installed :
http://www.mysite.com/svmanager
and have created following gallery :
http://www.mysite.com/svmanager/g1
in edit, advance, path is relative and location is /svmanager/g1

In edit, i select advance and change path (relative) to /trial1 and it seems to work fine.
in my browser http://www.mysite.com/svmanager/g1 doesn't exist anymore and http://www.mysite.com/trial1 exists.
svmanager index.php still displays the galery. So, svmanager is able to create a new trial1 folder on my server.

now i try a absolute path : http://www.mysite.com/private_galleries/trial1, clic update, close advanced, clic update again and nothing occurs. svmanager says it can't move the gallery.

q1. do i need to create http://www.mysite.com/private_galleries folder before moving the gallery ?

q2. does move change anything for next image upload and theme modifications in svmanager ?

q3. do you advise absolute path or relative pathes ?

q4. is there a preference for parent folder for good management  (svmanager subfolder or anywhere on the domain) ?

kind regards
marc

Re: moving the gallery : do we must create parent folders ?

q1. do i need to create http://www.mysite.com/private_galleries folder before moving the gallery ?

Yes, here are the rules given in the support page:

  1. The new gallery folder...either must not exist or may exist and be empty.

  2. Any folders above the gallery folder on the new path...must already exist. It doesn’t matter if they are empty or not.

  3. The path to the new gallery folder should contain only alphabetic characters, numeric characters, hyphen, underscore, tilde and dot (no spaces).

q2. does move change anything for next image upload and theme modifications in svmanager ?

Yes

q3. do you advise absolute path or relative pathes ?

Normally, relative paths are more flexible. Sometimes you may need absolute paths, for instance if you are embedding your galleries inside a content management system.

q4. is there a preference for parent folder for good management  (svmanager subfolder or anywhere on the domain) ?

I would use the default option of galleries inside the svManager folder unless you have some good reason to move them.

Re: moving the gallery : do we must create parent folders ?

many thanks for all advises and answers, Jack.

If i create a new gallery containing images relative to a party and call it "g2", many chances guys browsing "animals" on g1 tries "g2" and see its content.

i want a certain protection of my private galleries.
so renaming svmanager\g2 into svmanager\party makes it hidden without complex passwords, htaccess,...

so, if i understand, renaming svmanager\g2 into svmanager\party makes life easier for management than into mysite.com\private_galeries\party ?

what are the problems renaming g2 into party ? apparently we still can change parameters in svmanager and upload new images.
browsing seems always as fast as before,...

You should have no problems changing the gallery name. The g2 name is just a default.
