Topic: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Hi all,
Seeing as SimpleViewerAdmin doesn't seem to be actively maintained, I'm having a crack and updating it to be compatible with SimpleViewer 1.8.

Once it's decent, I'll chase down the author and see what's what.

Anyway, so far everything looks good, except that albums are a little buggy in Firefox. Sometimes the thumbs display, sometimes not. The main image very rarely displays.

There's an example of the problem here: http://benhughes.awardspace.com/testbed/?album=Album2

The call to viewer.swf looks good to me, and the 'open in new window' links work, so the images exist. The paths also look correct, including case.

Anyone have any ideas?

TIA,

Ben

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

hi Ben,

updating SVAdmin for SV1.8 is a great idea. It should be helpful to a lot of people.

Regarding images not showing in FF, try removing the "./" in the imagePath and thumbPath XML properties. Note that the imagePath can be an absolute URL or a relative URL, relative to the HTML doc.

Let me know how you get on. Thanks!

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Thanks for the reply Felix.

It seems to have helped a little - the thumbs now always display, however the full size image does not.

Any other suggestions?

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Hmm, interesting!

I have exactly the same problem with the default SV install.

http://benhughes.awardspace.com/simpleviewer/ is just the files from here unzipped and uploaded.

Is this a common problem?

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

This is really starting to bug me! The SV gallery at http://www.airtightinteractive.com/photos/ works perfectly fine, and I can't for the life of me work out the difference between how it is set up, and how http://benhughes.awardspace.com/simpleviewer/ is.

I've even taken index.html from the first sight and chucked it in the second, and still the same problem of images and thumbs not being displayed. I've re-run buildgallery.php, and get the correct output

Creating XML and thumbnails for SimpleViewer.
-------------------------------------------------

Sorting images by date.
Sorting images in reverse order.

- Created Image Entry for: 115-1503_IMG.jpg
- Created Thumbnail for: 115-1503_IMG.jpg

Successfully created XML document: gallery.xml

Other than the images, the gallery.xml's look the same too.

Anyone want to fill me in on the Firefox secret before I go nuts?

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Righto, someone shoot me!

It seems that the problem is (somehow) with the host! Putting the base simpleviewer install on my ISP's website works just fine in FF, but unfortunately I don't have PHP there.

The exact same files on awardspace (where I have PHP) fail to display thumbs and images, even though the permissions are 777 and everything works fine in IE.

I'm dumbfounded as to how the host could possibly be affecting this, based on browser type.

Maybe I just need to find another free host with PHP....

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Righto, things are looking better.

http://benhughes.freehostia.com/SVA/

That's SV1.8 and SVA1.4b. There's only two bugs that I've found:

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Hi Ben,

Fantastic idea. I recently bought Simpleviewer Pro 1.8 and it was really anoying that I was unable to use the PHP Admin tool. Since I do not have any experience with php scripts, I couldn't create something like that myself.

Any idea when you'll release the code?? i would like to give it a try

thanks!

Bart

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Hi Bart,
Thanks for the interest smile

The code is now available here: http://benhughes.freehostia.com/SVA/

I don't claim that it's perfect - before this I had no exposure to SV, SVA or PHP. Seems to work for me and a few others though.

I've emailed the original author but have not heard anything back as yet.

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Good work Ben,

BTW, does this work with posting to a flash file (it would be nice if Admin created a flash based menu as opposed to a PHP menu).

:-)

Just a suggestion!

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Nice one Ben! I'll post a link to your updated version of SVA.

Regarding your missing images on certain webhosts, I've found that some of the free hosting companies have very odd configurations that can break SimpleViewer. Also they may have 'Hotlink Protection' enabled. Hotlink Protection breaks SimpleViewer.

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Thanks Felix.

There's definitely something strange with that host, and its not disabling hotlinking because everything was fine in IE. I've notified them, not sure if they'll do anything about it.

I've also found a couple more problems with SVA. Firstly (and this was a prob in 1.3 too) renaming an album breaks 'open in new window' links - will look at fixing when I get a sec.

The other thing is that its using the 1.7.1 XML properties - can you point me to a definition of the 1.8 gallery.xml properties? I'll get that one fixed ASAP as it should be fairly simple.

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Quick couple of questions.

1. When I unzip the 1.4b client, do I need to add anything else to that folder or just unzip that folder to the webservers and I can setup a album from there?  Do I need to add files from the Simple Viewer 1.8 zipped file?  Does the Picasa template need to be updated?

2. Is there any mass way to update file onto the webservers instead of one file at a time?

Thanks folks.

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Sorry, haven't been around.

Thanks for the link Felix, I'll check it out.

jchaggar, yes, you need to include the SimpleViewer files as well as the SVA files. You only need viewer.swf and swfobject.js. I know nothing about picasa, sorry.

To FTP multiple files, check out FileZilla.

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Hi,
I have been trying to use the simpleviewer admin tool version 1.4 that was written by ben. I can log in fine, but when I try to add an album or click on the configuration it just jumps back again to the log in page. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong can anyone help me on this matter.
Regards

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Hey guys, I'm trying to install this for the first time and I keep getting 500 - Internal server error. The errror log in my hosts control panel gives this message:
[Thu Jun 21 11:29:30 2007] [error] [client XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX] Premature end of script headers: /home/XXXX/public_html/SVA/index.php

I've CHMOD'd everything to 777...

Any ideas?

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Did you change index.php at all?

Also, it looks like you're running your own web host - does it meet the requirements?

Other than that, I don't think I'll be much good to you. I don't know a whole lot about PHP, and I've since written picasaviewer, so don't use SVA any more.

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

No, I was getting the error on all pages. Turns out my host had either configured GD improperly or was using an old version... which is weird cause I used most of those functions in some of my own scripts. Anyway, it's up and running now. Sorry to bug you about it, but thanks for coming by to take a peek.

piacasaviewer is lookin pretty sweet, too!

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

No hassles, glad it's working for you now.

Sorry you had to chase me down, I only recently realised that I didn't have email notifications enabled for this forum smile

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Hi Ben (and others!)

I've got SimpleViewer 1.8 and downloaded the 1.4 admin.

I've already got a SimpleViewer gallery set up, but put Admin in another folder just to test it separately. Installed/uploaded fine and got into admin, configured, created a gallery, uploaded some pics....all looking good and the admin side working fine. But......

When I come to view my gallery via the back to gallery link, I just get a page saying Simple Viewer not set up!

Hmmmm....I thought the basic index.php page included with the admin distribution was meant to be a token gallery page? (ie.e normally it would be designed in my style). Why is simpleviewer not set up?

OK, I realised that I was not extracting admin into the same folder as SimpleViewer....but to be honest, I found it very difficult to understand the instructions here; what you show on your website, Ben, for the std. SimpleViewer distribution is not the same as what I've downloaded from Airtight - no flash_detect.js, no upgrade.html.....I guess because that was the list of an earlier version??

And then when you show the folder as it should be when the admin has been extracted, some of the SimpleViewer files have disappeared! No image_data.xml, no index.html......

sad

OK, I'm not technical, I know. But I am thus finding it hard to sort out what files I need where! Bearing in mind that I am working with the FREE 1.8 download and your 1.4 admin download.

Any chance of some simple instructions? As I say, for non-technicals it's more than a bit puzzling.

cheers
Hugh

Re: Updating SVAdmin for 1.8 - FF issues

Hi HJ,
Sorry, I don't really understand your problem. I haven't written any instructions (that I can find, anyway) so I don't know how you can have trouble following them.

I'm also not sure what you mean when you say 'what you show on your website for the std simpleviewer distribution' - again, I don't show anything.

Just for your info, I don't use SVA any more. Instead I wrote a script that links to PicasaWeb and allows you to display your picasa albums in SV. I find it much easier to manage my albums that way. You can find it here, along with instructions that I have written wink
