Topic: thumbnail generation

I'm curious to learn how SimpleViewer can generate thumbnails out of the images subdirectory rather than the additional thumbnails subdirectory. My objective is to limit the impact on the server, so I'm looking for a way to have my thumbnails and large picture derive from the same file.

I'm currently using the PHP variety of SimpleViewer with no real code variations.

How do I have this cake and eat it too? Thanks in advance!

Re: thumbnail generation

You would have to buy the pro version and re-write it to suit your needs but I don't see how you are reducing load on the server as you would need to create temporary files for the thumbnails, unless you create the temporary files on the users HD and re-configure simpleviewer to look there but I don't think that would be a good option for time and space reasons. Why are you concerned about server load anyway?

Re: thumbnail generation

Server load might not be the right term. My apologies. More accurately I'm interested in some method that will save some space on my server.

It seems that the auto generate function requires a second subdirectory of the same photos so if I have /pics/images/image1.jpg and so on I must compliment that with /pics/thumbs/image1.jpg and so on. A 1 MB subdirectory must be matched with a second directory, identical in all but name, gobbling up 2MB. This isn't pressing in the short term, but as I converted years of photos it will add up, double actually, rather quickly.

I do appreciate your thoughts and welcome any more you might have to offer.

Re: thumbnail generation

Your image files could be about 200kb depending on your jpeg compression level (I use about 8-10/12) and your thumbnails can be less than 10kb. Your jpeg compression on the thumbs can be more aggressive as they are quite small (65x65) and remember to strip all exif data from the thumbs and do not embed a color profile as sRGB is assumed anyway.

buildgallery.php does a good job of making small thumbs and can be modified to do just that and nothing else if you're not using it to build your gallery. I have image and thumb folders on my server that I just use for batch processing the thumbs.

Re: thumbnail generation

For my wedding galleries I often make the thumbs individually in PS by cropping a 65x65 square as I want to control exactly where the crop is taken from. But for the most part I just use the default  center crop.

Re: thumbnail generation

Phillip,

Thanks again for your advice. Could you elaborate on this bit when you have the time. But, please, no rush.
