Topic: How does maxJPGSize know if it's width or height?

Set this value to the largest dimension (width or height) of your largest image.

But how does it know which is it? if I use maxJPGSize=800, what should happen if I have both a 800x300 image and a 300x800 one?

It's both. The image area is square.

But it's based on the source (of "your" largest image) which isn't a square.

Doesn't matter if the image is a rectangle TitlViewer knows what it is suppose to do with the detentions. Each image is placed with in a square container with the detentions of maxJPGSize.
