Topic: New images showing X in Chrome but not in IE

Hi everyone,

I uploaded a new crop of images to my gallery at http://www.paulgardiner.ca/tattoos/tattoos.html and even though the gallery displays locally, it does not on the web. Yes, I have checked the 'jpg' vs 'JPG', made sure that direct linking to the images worked, checked the permissions etc.

When I plug in that address in IE, it works. But not in Chrome? Tried refreshing Ctrl F5.
There is only a problem with the new images. Old ones display fine.

Please help.

Re: New images showing X in Chrome but not in IE

I have viewed your gallery in Chrome, Firefox and IE11 and the same images fail to load in all 3 browsers (for me at least), for example images 22, 23 and 24.

According to your gallery's XML file, image 22 should be located here: http://www.paulgardiner.ca/tattoos/images/4P1030659.jpg
... but going directly to that location in a browser (bypassing SimpleViewer) results in an error 404 (file not found).
It certainly looks like the file is not in the correct location on your web server.
Please double-check that the '4P1030659.jpg' file is in your '/tattoos/images/' directory.
Perhaps you could try re-uploading the image to your web server in case something happened during the initial upload resulting in a corrupt or missing file.

Also, I notice that your gallery currently uses SimpleViewer v2.1.3.
You might like to try upgrading your gallery to the current version of SimpleViewer (v2.3.2) as many bugs have been fixed since v2.1.3. (Please see the Version History for a list of changes between versions.)
I do not know if this will help but it cannot do any harm and it will rule out any bugs from previous versions which have since been fixed as being potential causes of your problem.
Instructions for upgrading existing galleries can be found on the Upgrading SimpleViewer support page.

Re: New images showing X in Chrome but not in IE

Thank you. I downloaded the new one and set it up. I'm now encountering a different problem.

The page works in IE but not in Chrome. The gallery does not take up space in the body of the page?

Re: New images showing X in Chrome but not in IE

Please see this FAQ:
My gallery does not show in Firefox or gets cropped to a small height. Why?

The FAQ refers to Firefox but I believe that the issue described in the FAQ is the same one that you are experiencing.
Essentially, when using a percentage height (your gallery currently has a height of 100%), it is necessary to ensure that all parent containers of your gallery (all containers that your gallery is nested within) have heights explicitly specified via CSS.
Otherwise, SimpleViewer may not be able to determine its own height. If setting a gallery height of 100%, SimpleViewer needs to know what its height should be 100% of.
Please also see the note regarding 'Using Percentage Heights' in the Embedding into a HTML Page support section.

A quick fix would be to simply give your gallery a fixed height (e.g. 600px) instead of a percentage height.
Try changing:

simpleviewer.load("sv-container", "100%", "100%", "transparent", true);

... to something like:

simpleviewer.load("sv-container", "100%", "600px", "transparent", true);

Re: New images showing X in Chrome but not in IE

Thank you. That worked. I went ahead and updated another gallery within the website. I added three new images to the very beginning of the gallery. The problem is that it shows up when I open the file in my harddrive but once uploaded, it does not show the new images (nor does it have a placeholder or X for them.)

I have cleared the cache and pressed Control F5. All other changes show just not the new images. I have used the new svbuilder to make this gallery.

Re: New images showing X in Chrome but not in IE

Your gallery's XML file (http://paulgardiner.ca/paintings/gallery.xml) currently has 20 <image> entries. (I do not know how many images you expect to see in your gallery.)
If this is the new number of images, then clearing your browser's cache and reloading your web page should work.
If this is not the new number of images, then you will need to upload your latest 'gallery.xml' file to your web server to replace the current one.
If you are in any doubt as to whether or not the current 'gallery.xml' file is being overwritten with the new version, try deleting it from your web server first before uploading the new version in its place.
