is it possible to have captions look like this:

rather than this?

when I use a <br> within a caption, nothing loads after that point--not the rest of the caption, nor the rest of the thumbnails in that gallery. Any clues as to what might be going on?

You have to add HTML formatting within a CDATA tag. Check the FAQ, Q14 for details.
